Families of addiction can learn to influence, not control.

The need to control is a tremendous burden that taxes the emotions, mind and spirit because it is impossible to change another. Influence means taking care of self and setting limits for others.

Families can help an addict/alcoholic into treatment.

I have experienced much success with addiction by helping the family return to stability and ;leverage' their loved on to treatment. Families are the most powerful influence when guided by a responsible, trained 'coach.'.

Re-entering the world sober and clean.

Early recovery from addiction entails listening and learning how. After a year or two, it involves using the learned tools to gain insight into new ways to cope with our new lives, i.e., people and sober reality (jobs, school, socializing, relationships, feelings...).

Abusers quit drugs and alcohol. Addicts do not. Get an accurate diagnosis.

Abusers quit drugs and alcohol. Addicts do not. Get an accurate diagnosis.

When abusive drug/alcohol use creates consequences, the abuser quits becase it is not relieving pain. The addict keeps abusing because of loss of control and cravings.

Get an accurate diagnosis of your "addiction."

If addicted, you cannot succeed on your own. If abusing, you can.

Addicted or dependent? Treatment is different for each.

Addicted or dependent? Treatment is different for each.

The dependent person has been exposed to an addictive dug. He or she needs abstinence. The addict/alcoholic will become addicted to almost any mood-altering chemical and needs abstinence and tools to fend off cravings.

Make sure you get an accurate diagnosis.

While trying to get and stay sober & clean, be the student and not the teacher.

In early recovery from drugs/alcohol, we don't learn much when we are talking.

Relapse back to addiction is not necessary. Build your defenses.

Be inspired by adhering to a daily Program of recovery. Ask for release from drugs and alcohol in the morning; thank Him at night. Spend time with recovering people. Read recovery literature.Have a home group. Be a good person. Have quiet time. This is your daily PROGRAM.

Pay special attention to stress when recovering from addiction.

Find the 'sweet spot' which is attained after you surrender completely to your idea of a Creator who has your back and will never let you down. Then there is no stress. Fear has melted into faith.

We must self-diagnose our drinking and drug use.No one can tell us!

Ask: "Are you drinking or using drugs while in treatment?" "Are you planning to drink after you complete Treatment?"

If yes, see if you can manage it. Choose a plan to control your use, e.g., "I'll drink only two 12 oz. beers when I drink. See if you can do this. See if you can stop at two.

Try it for a month. If you fail, try treatment.

To Thine Own Self Be True!

Go all in!!! Do what successful recovering people did. It worked.

We must give up our plan for our recovery. We do not know how to get sober and clean on our own. Millions have tried. Do what the millions of successful people in recovery did.

Recovery from addiction/alcoholism is about getting 'right' with ourselves. No more guilt or behaviors that create guilt.

Self esteem comes back as we begin to live in a way in which God, self and family approves.

Addiction takes a second stage and now we can enjoy this gift of life.

The harm done when drug/alcohol affected has to be repaired.

Recovery entails making up for our mistakes when drinking. Then we are free to go and do whatever we choose. We are no longer held in captive by our guilt, sadness, grief and anger generated when actively addicted. We become free men and women.

Best Wishes,

Step One is the beginning. It begins the journey and come first.

Write the specific problems that resulted from abusing drugs and/or alcohol. Write one example of how the problem overtook you.

Strike while the iron is hot. Get sober/clean while you are motivated.

This adage is especially valid with drug/alcohol treatment. Don't wait for something else to occur before you decide to get sober and clean. Take action NOW!
