Marijuana is also called wacky weed.

THC does not leave the body like alcohol. Cannabis stays in the system and lodges in the receptor sites of the brain. It interferes with memory and reason.

Bad idea!

Addiction Recovery Holiday Redirection - Recovery is truly a Present!!!

Watch for overconfidence. Confidence comes from working a daily program of recovery:  pray, go to meetings, talk to others, have quiet time and pray. However, avoid knowing everything.

Addiction Recovery Redirection - Recovery is truly a Gift!!!

The change from active addiction back to life is astounding. A recent study suggested that, given enough time in recovery, the reversal/healing of the brain and body can be significant. Recovery is really easier than you think and is a joy. Drug free recovery works; the problem is highly treatable. #SundayMorning #addiction

Addiction Recovery Redirection - The Addiction Mind vs the Sober Mind.

Recovering alcoholics and addicts think "I never had it this good."

Active or untreated alcoholics and addicts think " I'm not hurting anyone but myself."

Addiction recovery redirections - Recovery is NEW, not difficult.

The key to new habits is going to meetings an learning from recovering people until you want to go. There comes a day when you are happy to be sober and clean. First, we must clean up the wreckage of the past, let go of the remorse, find relief from the depression and re-enter a new life that is full of purpose. We must work for this. Then you will find joy and freedom.

Best Wishes,

Dr. Peter A. Butkins

There is no "Magic Pill' that gets you sober and clean. It takes commitment/work.

We must be committed to recovery, not merely involved. This is like having ham and eggs for breakfast. The chicken is involved but the pig is committed. (Anonymous)

Recovery for addicts/alcoholics entails not acting, feeling, behaving or thinking like an addict/alcoholic. This new way of life takes years to master but one day to begin. It is best achieved by being with and learning from those who have 'been down' and have 'come back.'

Best Wishes,

 Dr. Peter A. Butkins

Recovery is a process, not an event. Lead your loved one to recovery by not subsidizing the addiction process.

Support the recovery process with love. "I'm here for you when you want help." Efforts at helping when he or she is not ready can feed the addiction. Assertively and lovingly let your loved one know that you can't help until they ask for help. If he or she asks, do whatever it takes to support recovery. Get help to find out how to do this.

Addiction is extremely treatable!

60,000 kids died last year from overdoses. Addiction is highly treatable without drugs.

When the family becomes involved, i.e. gets accurate information on addiction and recovery and learns how to use their leverage, Tough Love works!!!

Take charge of your families parents; do not let an addict/alcoholic take charge of the family or their own treatment program. Their thinking has been warped.

October is domestic violence month. Here are some guidelines:

SAFETY ALERT:

If you are in danger call 911.
Or reach the National Domestic Violence Hotline

If you are in immediate danger, please:

·         Call 911.

·         Contact your local hotline.

·         Contact a national hotline:

·         Call the U.S. National Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or TTY 1-800-787-3224.

·         Call, text or chat Love Is Respect—the U.S. National Teen Dating Violence Helpline: 1-866-331-9474 or TTY 1-866-331-8453, text "loveis" to 77054 or live chat at http://www.loveisrespect.org.

Remember: Corded phones are more private and less able to be intercepted than cordless phones or analog cell phones.

Be Aware: You may not be able to reach 911 using an Internet phone or Internet-based phone service, so you may need to be prepared to use another phone to call 911.

Contact your local domestic violence program, shelter, or rape crisis center to learn about free cell phone donation programs.

Tips for Using Technology

If you think your activities are being monitored, they probably are.

Abusive people are often controlling and want to know your every move. You don't need to be a computer programmer or have special skills to monitor someone's computer and Internet activities. Anyone can do it and there are many ways to monitor with programs like Spyware, keystroke loggers, and hacking tools.

It is not possible to delete or clear all the "footprints" of your computer or online activities.

If you are being monitored, it may be dangerous to change your computer behaviors such as suddenly deleting your entire Internet history if that is not your regular habit.

If you think you may be monitored on your home computer, be careful how you use your computer since an abuser might become suspicious.

You may want to keep using the monitored computer for innocuous activities, like looking up the weather. Use a safer computer to research an escape plan, to look for new jobs, apartments or bus tickets, or to ask for help.

Email and Instant/Text Messaging (IM) are not safe or confidential ways to talk to someone about the danger or abuse in your life.

If possible, please call a hotline instead. If you use email or IM, please use a safer computer and an account your abuser does not know about.

Computers can store a lot of private information.

This includes what you look at via the Internet, the emails and instant messages you send, Internet-based phone and IP-TTY calls you make, Web-based purchases and banking, and many other activities.

It might be safer to use a computer in a public library, at a community technology center (CTC), at a trusted friend's house, or at an Internet Cafe. Modern technology and social networks change frequently. Educate yourself by reading about the NRCDV's Tech Safety Resources. This special collection of selected articles, fact sheets, papers, reports and other materials are designed to assist advocates and survivors interested in understanding the safe use of technology.

Addiction Recovery is much better and easier than using.

Let's work toward an educated remedy for treating addicts which includes a spiritual approach and not a pill. Recovery is a blessing and life becomes a joy without drugs and alcohol.

Enabling occurs when the addict/alcoholic is shielded from the consequences needed to recover.

It is usually unintentional. Do not shield him or her from the consequences as this is what motivates him or her to recover. The pain and loss are the answer and can lead to recovery.

Effective recovery from addiction involves abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals plus character building.

Effective recovery from addiction involves abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals plus character building. Total abstinence gives the addict/alcoholic a chance to recover from the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical damge he has done by giving up the devious ways and then paying back for the harm he or she has done. This usually takes many months and should be done in the mainstream of life.

Addicts/alcoholics must want to get sober and clean because of their severe pain and loss. Then there is much work to do. Ideally, this is done with and by those who have 'been there' in the Twelve Step programs. It is beneficial to be mentored by a good therapist as the addict/alcoholic goes through the first year or two. A personal trusting relationship with a good therapist who has been there and a good outpatient group can save the person from the old self.

Family Recovery from addiction is a miracle.

Families forgive when the effort is shown to be lasting over time and the behavior is consistently spiritually motivated. Families, once destroyed by addiction,  are usually better off than if the harm had never been done.

I have seen families, once destroyed by addiction, become reunited with love and forgiveness once the change becomes long lasting.

They are perhaps better off than if the harm had never been done. The rebirth gives meaning to the rejections of the past. The awful past becomes their greatest asset.

Do not give up hope nor be afraid to come back and make amends for harm done. You have nothing to lose but pride. Losing pride is freeing.

Peace and Love,

Doc Pete
