Effective recovery from addiction involves abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals plus character building.

Effective recovery from addiction involves abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals plus character building. Total abstinence gives the addict/alcoholic a chance to recover from the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical damge he has done by giving up the devious ways and then paying back for the harm he or she has done. This usually takes many months and should be done in the mainstream of life.

Addicts/alcoholics must want to get sober and clean because of their severe pain and loss. Then there is much work to do. Ideally, this is done with and by those who have 'been there' in the Twelve Step programs. It is beneficial to be mentored by a good therapist as the addict/alcoholic goes through the first year or two. A personal trusting relationship with a good therapist who has been there and a good outpatient group can save the person from the old self.

The addiction problem perpetuates itself because we don't publicize recovery. We support drinking and drug behavior.

Addiction must be brought out into the open and not just mentioned when there is an overdose. We must publicize the solution and the joys of sobriety.

Addiction is chronic. Treatment is a daily program taught by survivors.

I work with many addicts and alcoholics who cut back or quit in their earlier years and then have a serious problem when they get out of control two, three, five or ten years later. They are not aware of the choinicity of addiction. It requires daily treatment taught by twelve step members who teach vigilance, consistency and model the joy of doing this.

Inpatient treatment for addiction does not get people sober and clean. There is much work ahead.

Recovery takes much spiritual, mental, emotional and physical work. Stability takes a few years in the mainstream of society where triggers can and must be neutralized.

Addiction feeds itself on lies. Great Lies!!!

Addiction feeds itself on lies. Great Lies!!!The disease of addiction has a mind of its own. It tells us that it does not exist and causes no problems. The ruse is that the problems are caused by other things. The question is, "Would you have had a dui if you weren't drinking?"
