The Myth of medicating Addicts/Alcoholics.

Prescription drug abuse is rampant. We should be cautious when giving medication to those who have no control over their intake. Rigorous family work must be performed in order to structure the use of needed medication for addicts. Let's work toward an educated remedy for treating addicts which includes a spiritual approach and not a pill.

Enabling occurs when the addict/alcoholic is shielded from the consequences needed to recover.

It is usually unintentional. Do not shield him or her from the consequences as this is what motivates him or her to recover. The pain and loss are the answer and can lead to recovery.

Effective recovery from addiction involves abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals plus character building.

Effective recovery from addiction involves abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals plus character building. Total abstinence gives the addict/alcoholic a chance to recover from the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical damge he has done by giving up the devious ways and then paying back for the harm he or she has done. This usually takes many months and should be done in the mainstream of life.

Addicts/alcoholics must want to get sober and clean because of their severe pain and loss. Then there is much work to do. Ideally, this is done with and by those who have 'been there' in the Twelve Step programs. It is beneficial to be mentored by a good therapist as the addict/alcoholic goes through the first year or two. A personal trusting relationship with a good therapist who has been there and a good outpatient group can save the person from the old self.

When disturbed, our communication is disturbed.

Recovery entails taking responsibility for our anger, fears and hurts that hinder good relationships and eliminate all chances for mature negotiation.

Family Recovery from addiction is a miracle.

Families forgive when the effort is shown to be lasting over time and the behavior is consistently spiritually motivated. Families, once destroyed by addiction,  are usually better off than if the harm had never been done.

I have seen families, once destroyed by addiction, become reunited with love and forgiveness once the change becomes long lasting.

They are perhaps better off than if the harm had never been done. The rebirth gives meaning to the rejections of the past. The awful past becomes their greatest asset.

Do not give up hope nor be afraid to come back and make amends for harm done. You have nothing to lose but pride. Losing pride is freeing.

Peace and Love,

Lasting recovery begins with surrender due to severe pain and loss.

When enablers stop 'helping,' the problems can be perceived and felt. Then the addict/alcoholic has a chance to become desperate and seek help. When given shelter, food or a hospital bed for using drugs and/or alcohol, the problem gets worse. The addict/alcoholic is more convinced of his innocence and the desire to use becomes greater.

The addiction problem perpetuates itself because we don't publicize recovery. We support drinking and drug behavior.

Addiction must be brought out into the open and not just mentioned when there is an overdose. We must publicize the solution and the joys of sobriety.

Enabling protects the family from the truth. Shielding an alcoholic is deadly.

When parents unintentionally protects their child from an alcoholic consequence, the behavior is rewarded and reoccurs. This results in a reinfrcing of the sick mindset that intoxication is justified and can be repeated. No consequences mean no change.
