Addiction Recovery Holiday Redirection - Recovery is truly a Present!!!

Many times unresolved grief emerges during the holiday season.

Grieving is very painful for a recovering person in early recovery. Pent up feelings that have been building for years can make the loss seem unbearable. Remember to talk, vent, share and unload therapeutically. This may be new and well worth it because it is healing. Help-seeking behavior is a MUST in recovery. Self-disclosure is a close second.

Reality takes some getting 'used to' but you will learn from this experience to grieve in a healing way. Remember, "This too shall Pass." Don't drink or drug and you can be there for self and others.

Addiction Recovery Redirection - Recovery is truly a great opportunity.

We don't have to get sober and clean - We get to do it.

Get the first year in with a good addiction therapist who has 'been there' and you will uncover most of the traps that take you back. Involve family to help you stay honest, accountable and loved. If you fall, use the experience to correct whatever is not working and keep going.

Addiction Recovery Redirection - Recovery is truly a Miracle!!!

We keep getting representatives who talk about addiction but have not been there, have not studied it and don't understand it. The experts have been on the streets and come back from hell. They know addiction inside and out. They have beaten it and are sober and clean for years.

These recovering people still keep it arrested by living and practicing a spiritual way of life; not religious but spiritual, doing the right things and developing character.  They have felt the pain deeply because they were not protected from their "bottom" and thus became motivated to do the work that recovery entails. This result is truly a miracle. You can trust anything these people say about recovery from addiction.

Best Wishes,

Addiction Recovery Redirection - Recovery is truly a Better Way of LIFE!!!

Recovery meetings will bring Hope if you work for it. Put about 30% of the effort that you put into drinking and/or drugging. Prioritize recovery and you will get things back. Put job, money, family, play or a relationship in front of your recovery and you will lose the job, money, family, play or a relationship.

Put recovery, meetings, steps, sponsor.. first and you will get back or get to keep the job, money, family, play or a relationship.

Learn from me and not the disease and its pain. Be wise and learn from watching, listening and reading.

The good news - It's good work, pay is excellent and the pension is even better!!!

Best Wishes,

Addiction Recovery Redirection - Recovery is truly a Gift!!!

The change from active addiction back to life is astounding. A recent study suggested that, given enough time in recovery, the reversal/healing of the brain and body can be significant. Recovery is really easier than you think and is a joy. Drug free recovery works; the problem is highly treatable. #SundayMorning #addiction

Addiction recovery redirections - Recovery is NEW, not difficult.

The key to new habits is going to meetings an learning from recovering people until you want to go. There comes a day when you are happy to be sober and clean. First, we must clean up the wreckage of the past, let go of the remorse, find relief from the depression and re-enter a new life that is full of purpose. We must work for this. Then you will find joy and freedom.

Best Wishes,

Dr. Peter A. Butkins

There is no "Magic Pill' that gets you sober and clean. It takes commitment/work.

We must be committed to recovery, not merely involved. This is like having ham and eggs for breakfast. The chicken is involved but the pig is committed. (Anonymous)

Recovery for addicts/alcoholics entails not acting, feeling, behaving or thinking like an addict/alcoholic. This new way of life takes years to master but one day to begin. It is best achieved by being with and learning from those who have 'been down' and have 'come back.'

Best Wishes,

 Dr. Peter A. Butkins

Recovery is a process, not an event. Lead your loved one to recovery by not subsidizing the addiction process.

Support the recovery process with love. "I'm here for you when you want help." Efforts at helping when he or she is not ready can feed the addiction. Assertively and lovingly let your loved one know that you can't help until they ask for help. If he or she asks, do whatever it takes to support recovery. Get help to find out how to do this.

Addiction is extremely treatable!

Treatment for addiction is different than traditional treatment for 'people problems.'

Addicts/alcoholics are usually preoccupied with their fears and complaints. We mistakenly get diagnosed with anxiety disorder because of this. Over the past 31 years,I have seen hundreds of addicts/alcoholics stop shaking after participating in twelve-step meetings for just one or two months.

We need to get out of ourselves and not focus more on self. Our chief problem is worry over self. It's wonderful to know that we don't have to do this anymore.

'Our very survival depends upon constant thought of others' (AA book, 1928).

Addicts/alcoholics need to think of others more and self less. Balance is the KEY to the door of recovery!

Have a safe and happy journey,

Recovery from addiction takes a while but it works and gets really good.

The first year is up and down and, in my opinion, it's the best year. 'It was the worst of times and it was the best of times.' We learn to cope, hope and enjoy life.

AND it was worth all the time and effort.

Relapse and complacency return when we fail to hang onto the pain that got us to recovery.

Knowledge fades when we feel the euphoric recall and our disease becomes activated. It comes out of hiding. We need a daily reminder at twelve step meetings of the awful damage done to us by this baffling disease. If we stop associating with our recovering friends, stop praying, stop reading our literature and stop trying to help the new person, we go down for the count.
