Let's focus on solutions to problems like addiction and not create chaos by focusing on manufactured problems or projected complaints.

Addiction is highly treatable by those who have treated themselves, not those who don't know how to treat t. It takes years to understand the solution and be able to reach addicts. Throwing money and drugs at addiction makes it much worse. Call me for the solution. Dr. Peter A. Butkins, LMT

Recovering people, law, honest treatment professionals and families can arrest the opiate problem.

It will take a synthesis of these people working together with integrity. Greed and power have no place in treatment.

Addiction Recovery is much more than abstinence.

Recovery requires abstinence, of course. You cannot be drug and alcohol free if you are still drinking or using drugs. Next comes character change and humility. A purposeful spiritual life replaces a life of hedonism and self-centered fear and loathing.

Recover and enjoy your new life.

Addiction is very treatable (by the right people).

Those who have 'been there' are the experts. Most addicts/alcoholics need coaching by peers. This is the direction to promote, not more drugs!

Methadone has been a nightmare. Drug free means drug free.

Drug/alcohol treatment is simple. The family has the control if they learn to use it properly. Get a therapist who knows addictions, has been there and can help you become the therapist.

Addiction Therapists should be made of stern stuff!!!

We must do no harm. We can't be part of a system that over medicates, kicks addicts from treatment because of insurance stopping and before they are ready, only to go back to their ghetto and die. We must take a stand. Kids are dying out there.

DO NO HARM!!!

Effective Treatment for DrugAlcohol Addiction.

Good treatment is best administered by thoes who have 'been there' and know the traps Even more, these people know how to solve the problems that arise the first year or two without medication or other forms of blocking feelings and reality.

Addicts need to cope with feelings and not regress to anesthetizing them. Anger, fear, remorse and old hurts surface and must be resolved. Those who are sober and clean for years have done this and teach it.

We need to address this. The addictions field is being monopolized by corporations with little knowledge of effective treatment. AND, it is killing us!!!

A Lesson in Enabling!!! Johnny Manziel Escapes.

Treatment for addiction or domestic violence seldom works unless the perpetrator wants treatment and seeks treatment. The psychic change needed can only be attained by pain and loss that creates humility and motivates the person to ask for help.  Otherwise, treatment is usually done while the perpetrator is in denial. Try changing something that you don't want to change and don't think you have to change and, most importantly, resent the people who want to change you!

Ask any entertainer who has been in the news for addiction treatment or have refused it and continued to harm others. Sometimes tragic events do not motivate because the addict/alcoholic has warped his or her mind.

Look at the recent deaths from addiction. Most people have to die to get sober and clean while addiction is so treatable. The key is too not take away the pain and loss - use it to motivate the person with firm love. Pain is leverage!!!

Dropped charges lead to dropped treatment.  Addiction is not a game.  Hopefully Trump will learn how to treat it. I hope he reads this blog.

Love and Peace,

Dr. Peter A. Butkins

Recovery 101               P. A. Butkins 09--07-16 Just because you know how to stay sober doesn't mean that you will!

Knowing the step, stages and signs of recovery and the symptoms, signals and idiosyncrasies of relapse does not mean that you will stay sober and clean.

Knowing how to sponsor, where the best meetings are, who the best sponsor is, memorizing the step, knowing the traditions, legacies and warranties does not mean you are in recovery.  Attending AA or NA meetings does not mean you are in recovery, an active member.

You can go to meetings often and get worse.

You have to perform the tasks that sober and clean and happy people perform in order to become sober, happy and clean.

Self-knowledge is a way to keep controlling your disease and your world.  God is in charge; He is in control. Stop intellectualizing your disease and act.

Redo the steps, sponsor and do service work at your meeting or club.

Do any service work but do it!

until

you can sponsor. (Put your name on the sponsorship list)

Self-knowledge availed us____________!!!

Stay Sober and Prosper,

Doc Pete, the imperfect therapist

Family Treatment for Addiction. Substance Abuse.

Family Recovery              Butkins, 2016

I have marital couples enter treatment with the plan that they will work in therapy if the other person changes.  This does not work.  The opposite works.  When the family works toward reconstruction, the family has a chance to heal. This is especially true in a family where there s addiction. If the family waits until the addict is better and continues to harbor the old anger and hurts, the addict, identified patient, is stuck in a dysfunctional family. The spouse or parent... will resist his efforts to get sober and clean.  They will become angry when he goes to his meetings because he is not at home. In other words, they will not be cooperating with his treatment.

When the family enters treatment and participates in family night and family meetings and attends individual or group treatment, Al-anon, for themselves, we can be successful.

Attending treatment means that you are healthy enough to see that you have to also grow.

I ask you, as family members, to let me guide you.

Thank you, Doc Pete

Addiction is highly treatable if the therapist is highly skilled.

What is of utmost importance in addictions treatment is to find a therapist who is doing it because he or she has a solution that worked for themselves or a close relative/friend. Make sure the therapist is either in recovery and attends 12-step meetings for self or, if not in treatment for substances, goes to Al-Anon.

This is what I have come to believe after 50 years of studying and living addiction treatment and recovery.
