Am I an alcoholic or an addict?

The biggest indicator is if you continue when you or others are seeing and suffering from problems.

It difficult if not impossible to understand addiction because all we see is the aberrant behavior and not the unintentional loss of control.

You can always tell and alcoholic or an addict but you can't tell him much!

Recovery comes when the person breaks denial. At this point, the main attribute needed is teachability .  The person must be able and willing to be coached.  This entails receiving feedback on erroneous thinking, feeling and behaviors.

When the family unites and loves the person enough to lovingly yet firmly let the addict know of their pain and their unwillingness to continue the dysfunctional pattern, the addict can wake up, become motivated and enter recovery.

Use an expert in addiction: a licensed therapist who has first hand experience and is cautious about any medication or other diagnoses at the beginning of treatment.

God bless.
