Binge drinking can be fatal - addiction low tolerance of normal people.

One of ten persons is an alcoholic. Nine of ten can drink or smoke marijuana normally, sometimes may abuse, but do not continue if there is a problem. Abuse of alcohol, one to two ounces in at three three hours is usual.  If you drink more than this, check to see if you have a difficult time stopping.  Call me at (407) 786.1913 for more.

Be careful,

Man up and Just Say Something (to an addict)!!!

My daughter would tell me to say WOman up!

We need to have the courage to risk controversy and say something to help another person recognize his or her problem with alcohol and/or drugs.  Addiction is fatal and even abuse can be fatal.  Save a life or plant a seed today.  Say something like:

"Listen, you're my friend... I care about what happens to you. I want you to stop using. It's causing me to worry about you because I'm afraid that you'll end up without your job or family or life... I know someone who you can talk to if you want help. Let me know."

This is one version of an intervention.  The main direction to take is one with caring and a loving tone with a sincere message about your concern.

Addicts die drunk and high because no one ever says anything.

So           -              JUST SAY SOMETHING!

Doc Pete

P.S. You can tell them to call (407) 786-1913 and I'll talk to them personally.

America needs Unity not Addiction. "Normal" people can negotiate.

I call non-addicts/alcoholics "normal."  Normal people can  can work things out and make others successful.  Addicts want MORE much of the time if not always.  Fears and resentments rule their lives when untreated.  Families and loved ones can make a difference if educated to:

1. Say, "I care about you."

2. "I'm concerned about your drug and/or alcohol use."

3. "Get help before it's too late and you end up like all the others who thought they could beat the game."

4. "Call me when you want help."

Be sure to refer them to 12 step meetings or a therapist who has "been there."

Parents - Don't settle for sometimes recovery from addiction.

Many times a teen will stop his or her extreme substance abuse yet still use.  They may try recovery but only do it to satisfy you or the judge or the school.

This does not work for an addict or alcoholic.

Team u with a good therapist who knows recovery, goes to meetings or knows twelve-step works and will coach you.

The key to addiction recovery os ongoing abstinence and recovery actions that the recovering people in AA or NA know because they do it.  Follow their directions and keep doing it When parents go to Al-anon, the chances of success go way up.

Dr. P. Butkins

Best of luck and God bless.

Intervene now or let addiction take over.

When you become educated with accurate information about your loved one's addiction problem, you will be able to choose between continued efforts to help him or her or using the guidance of a trained professional to coach you.  I recommend the latter.

We, as therapists, have had good results when the family gives us permission to be the therapist and we all work as a team.

Abby Wambach - Substance Abuse is Equal Opportunity.

The substance abuse problem is pandemic.  There are those of us who have seen the death and destruction caused by this insidious problem for decades. I have read all sides of the problem from moral to physiological causes, weakness theories and hereditary origins and I believe that the problem is more complex than we can imagine.  It has more components than any other disease we could imagine.  The solution is what is important - not analysis of the cause.  The cause does not matter.  It is nonsensical to diagnose Abby Wambach, Lindsey Lohan or Charlie Sheen... What to look for is repeated problems and an inability to change the behavior.  Addiction is characterized by repeated lack of judgment and a lowering of inhibition when intoxicated.  A non-addict will not repeat behaviors that are life threatening.  Addicts will.

So let's not judge Abby or anyone else.  What is important is obtaining accurate information, Al-Anon and getting information from those who have been there. We also need to listen to those who study the problem objectively, not to only get rich.

After all, one out of ten persons has the genetic pre-disposition and can become an addict/alcoholic.  It can be anyone, regardless of size, color or gender. It does not discriminate.

Love and Peace,

Doc Pete

Justin Bieber was charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest and driving without a valid license after police saw the pop star street racing in a yellow Lamborghini in Miami in January 2014. "What the f*** did I do?" he asked the officer. "Why did you stop me?" He was booked into a Miami jail after failing a sobriety test.

Recovery is pretty simple, not easy but simple.

Most  the problems we encounter in recovery can be solved with a decision.  Those not willing to make good decisions are still being enabled and, therefore, are not very motivated.  They do not need more treatment or medication, they need less coddling. When faced with recovery or much loss and pain, addicts can learn. When miscreant behavior is supported and there are no consequences, the behavior becomes worse/reinforced and the addiction strengthens.

Real recovery must be demonstrated with good decisions and actions in the mainstream of life.  Substance abuse treatment is simple.  The systems allow it to continue due to lack of motivation and accurate information.

If you want to get sober and clean, call me.  (407) 786-1913

Substance Abuse Treatment with Integrity.

Substance abuse, Drug/Alcohol Treatment should involve a strong theoretical framework coupled with a strong foundation in ethical non-biased research cited by research experts who use strong design and methodology with minimal design error to glean accurate results and not careless suggestions based on financial motives.  In a time when we need strong treatment based on total drug abstinence, we have an entire community touting drug solutions at exorbitant costs to desperate families who are in crisis and are very suggestible.  When in this condition and feeling hopeless, they jump at the opportunity to accept empty and false promises of success based on very inept treatment.

Pay for the solution but no more than $300 per week at the most for a very high level of treatment.

There is the right way to get sober and clean that involves using the family and a skilled therapist to get the person to recovery via the twelve-step Programs.

Call me at (407) 786-1913 for more.

Poppy Seed Death - Judgment and inhibition factor can cause fatal results.

College Student Allegedly Killed By Homemade Poppy Seed Tea 9 / 22

Late last Saturday night, 21-year-old Steven "Austin" Underhill drank tea his fraternity brothers at James Madison University brewed with the ancient opiate poppy seed. The junior engineering student was found dead the next day in what police believe to be a direct result of the "poppy" brew.

"We know based on the research we’ve done that it does have lethal effects and that the victim consumed it," Harrisonburg Lt. of Special Operations Chris Rush told The Daily News. "This is the first case we’ve had around here. There’s nothing to indicate there was any kind of initiation."

Poppy seeds contain various concentrations of morphine and codeine, both of which are opiates and controlled substances with addictive properties. Overdosing on morphine can cause death by filling up the lungs with fluid passed from the bloodstream, known as pulmonary edema — this is consistent with lethal doses of opiates. Because the concentration of morphine in poppy seeds can vary greatly, it makes it difficult to predict the type of high or level of danger a person consuming the tea is possibly subjecting themselves to.

According to a study published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, morphine content can be anywhere from two to 251 times in strength depending upon the exact seed type, harvesting time, how well seeds were washed, among other factors. It’s not the poppy seeds itself that contain opiates, but rather it's residual pollen passed onto the seeds from the pods it grows in during the harvesting process.

What's more, poppy seeds sold in bulk in the supermarket are not regulated in relation to the amount of opiates they contain because they are intended for baking purposes. The poppy seeds in Underhill's case were reportedly purchased at a local Harrisonburg store near the university. Since then, many drug and grocery stores in the area have decided to take poppy seeds off of their shelves in fear of contributing to someone’s death or addiction. One shop has decided to require a proof-of-business license in order to purchase the seeds.

The process of brewing poppy seeds to achieve a morephine-like can take 15 to 20 minutes, and the effect can last roughly 24 hours; the residue creates a hallucinogenic high when brewed in high quantities. But the tea is known to have a very bitter and foul taste, which may be why it hasn't reached a height of popularity.

Underhill's exact cause of death is still unknown. A pending toxicology report, urine and blood samples will reveal the concentrated presence of both morphine and codeine if the tea was the student's cause of death. Investigators plan to test the poppy seed tea consumed the night of his death and compare it to samples found in the report.

Joseph Randle has drug involved problems - Jailed finally.

Notice in the article below that drugs are mentioned in paragraph five and six of this article, suggesting that we as a country still do not report drug and alcohol abuse or addiction as the cause of the problem or at best mention it last.  This is exactly what the alcoholic/addict thinks in order to justify the drinking... he buries it under four other thoughts and beliefs. This enables him or her to continue.

So, the moral of the story is not to subsidize the problem by ignoring, minimizing and blaming the behavior on circumstances or bad luck. In order to recover, the addict needs to own his or her responsibility for the harm done to others and society.

THIS PROBLEM MAY BE MUCH BIGGER THAN WE COULD EVER IMAGINE!!!

I didn't have a problem every time I drank or abused drugs, but every time I had a problem, I was drug or alcohol affected.

                                                                                                                                                            - Anonymous

By the way, Cannabis creates poor judgment, lack of inhibition and self destructive behavior/consequences for the addict definitely and perhaps also for the social use.  At any rate, I really don't want my country to be run by drug affected people.

Love and Peace,   Doc Pete

From Cowboys starting RB to jail: Joseph Randle's rapid fall gets worse

On Oct. 25, Joseph Randle started his sixth straight game at running back for the Dallas Cowboys. He was owned in almost every fantasy football league in America.

Exactly one month later he was out of the NFL and behind bars in Kansas.

Randle's incredible fall continued when he was arrested and charged with one felony and five misdemeanors following an incident Tuesday night in a Kansas casino. KSN.com said he was in Sumner County Jail with a $25,000 bond. Late last month Randle went AWOL from the Cowboys when he learned he lost his starting job, following news that he violated the NFL's conduct policy (he was eventually suspended four games), and he was cut by the Cowboys on Nov. 3. Randle had some high-profile run ins with the law before Tuesday.

[Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $50K in our $350K contest for Week 12]

On Tuesday, he was arrested on suspicion of criminal threat, assault on a law officer, battery, disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, and interference with law enforcement, KSN said.

TMZ reported Randle was intoxicated and belligerent on the casino floor and was asked to leave, and on the way out he spit on the floor and assaulted a security officer.

The Cowboys stuck with Randle after he was caught shoplifting underwear and cologne last year in an embarrassing episode, and after a more serious legal matter in February when police responded to a domestic violence call concerning an incident with Randle and the mother of his child. Randle was arrested on possession of marijuana but not charged with domestic violence.

Randle didn't play that poorly for the Cowboys, with 315 yards and four touchdowns on 76 carries. When he was cut, no other team showed any interest in picking him up. This latest episode might close that door forever.

After everything that has happened in the past month, his days as the starting running back for perhaps the highest profile team in the NFL seems like another lifetime ago.
