Substance abuse treatment beginnings.

The most important variables when beginning treatment for drug/alcohol addiction are detoxification and an accurate diagnosis.

Addiction Treatment is work.

There is no magic pill to help with years of built up guilt. shame. anger, fear and sadness let alone the shock of waking up to find you have these feelings. Recovery means much work. It is worth it and easier than the slow death of addiction.

Best Wishes,

Heroin Addiction treatment is similar to treatment from any drug.

Treatment is not a complex or magical process. It is a matter of hitting a hard bottom, getting rid of enablers and doing what sober and clean people have done to become successful in recovery.

Heroin addiction is treatable.

I have found that, with much work, any drug can be overcome. This involves 'surrendering to win' and learning to be sober and clean by being the student. Control must be surrendered.

Do not let and active addict run your family.

The alcoholic/addict can be convincing you that all will be well again. Listen to the actions, not the talk.

Families with addictive members suffer incredibly.

Too many times I have sat with mothers and fathers, spouses and children who have lost their loved one to addiction. And the person is sitting there. It is no longer the loved one they knew.

Families of addiction can learn to influence, not control.

The need to control is a tremendous burden that taxes the emotions, mind and spirit because it is impossible to change another. Influence means taking care of self and setting limits for others.

Treatment for addiction is much easier than using drugs and alcohol.

At the end, using drugs and alcohol is demeaning, joyless and makes the true person unrecognizable.

Addiction owns the addict. Life becomes fruitless and dreams disappear in deference to the substance. Get out and stay out when you see it.

Families can help an addict/alcoholic into treatment.

I have experienced much success with addiction by helping the family return to stability and ;leverage' their loved on to treatment. Families are the most powerful influence when guided by a responsible, trained 'coach.'.

Re-entering the world sober and clean.

Early recovery from addiction entails listening and learning how. After a year or two, it involves using the learned tools to gain insight into new ways to cope with our new lives, i.e., people and sober reality (jobs, school, socializing, relationships, feelings...).

Addiction gets old and fails us.

The good times have past and the drug is now causing pain, not a high. Reason is gone. Turn to others who are clean and sober. Your best friend has left.

Abusers quit drugs and alcohol. Addicts do not. Get an accurate diagnosis.

Abusers quit drugs and alcohol. Addicts do not. Get an accurate diagnosis.

When abusive drug/alcohol use creates consequences, the abuser quits becase it is not relieving pain. The addict keeps abusing because of loss of control and cravings.

Get an accurate diagnosis of your "addiction."

If addicted, you cannot succeed on your own. If abusing, you can.

Addicted or dependent? Treatment is different for each.

Addicted or dependent? Treatment is different for each.

The dependent person has been exposed to an addictive dug. He or she needs abstinence. The addict/alcoholic will become addicted to almost any mood-altering chemical and needs abstinence and tools to fend off cravings.

Make sure you get an accurate diagnosis.

Recovery from addiction comes with change that happens when we accept help and work at mental, emotional and spiritual growth.

There is no magic cure for addiction. Our deep seated fears, resentments, guilt and sadness must be resolved for us to prosper. This is not hard yet it takes time.

Best Wishes,

Recovery from addiction is new, not difficult. Learning involves repetition.

Be open-minded to self diagnosis and then be open to learning from successful recovering people. If you are struggling with intense anger, fear, guilt or sadness, get outside help.

Recovery is easier with help.
