Abstinence

Term Definition
Abstinence
Abstinence is absence of alcohol and/or drugs as opposed to the term sober.  Abstinence does not imply any of the positive changes in character and values that is the result of 'working a twelve-step program' and becoming honest and aware of old traits and implementing the desired transformation.  The latter is being sober.                         Doc Pete
