Term Definition
Qualify

Qualify is the term used to describe the process of disclosing one’s addiction and recovery experiences within the context of a recovery mutual support group. The practice of “qualifying” (“My name is _______ and I’m an alcoholic”) began within Alcoholics Anonymous in the 1960s (in California) during a time that narcotic addicts began seeking admission to A.A. The qualifying ritual was a way to affirm the A.A. tradition regarding criteria for membership; it came to serve as a symbolic ticket of admission to closed meetings (Source: Jim B., AAHistoryLovers). Today, the only requirement for A.A. membership, as defined in A.A.’s Twelve Traditions, is a “desire to stop drinking.”
