Is Cannabis a harmless drug? Is the following coincidental? You decide.
Detroit Pistons forward Josh Smith (6) draws a charging call on Washington Wizards guard Glen Rice Jr. (14) in …
Pro basketball player Glen Rice Jr. was shot in the leg Sunday night during an argument at an Atlanta restaurant and arrested for reckless conduct and marijuana possession, according to a police report obtained by Jennifer Brett of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Rice, the son of three-time NBA All-Star Glen Rice, has played 16 games for the Washington Wizards over the past two seasons before being released in January. He figured to spend this season in the D-League or overseas.
TMZ.com first reported the story, but the AJC report provides more concrete information:
The Atlanta police report from Sunday night says that officers met with a restaurant employee upon responding to the scene, on Ivan Allen Boulevard. The employee said that a group of men who had been at the restaurant began quarreling and were asked to leave.
The squabbling continued outside, and a shot rang out. The report does not indicate who is suspected of doing the shooting, which injured Rice in the leg. A Smith and Wesson revolver was later recovered at the scene, and may be stolen, the police report said.
The restaurant, Scales 925, is owned by rapper T.I., but he is not mentioned in the police report in any context.
The AJC story also contains the full police report, including these details:
“There is video footage from the restaurant that shows the altercation on the parking lot, and the male with the red shirt shot at Mr. Glen Rice on the left leg, and the subject left the location as a passenger on a black sedan that was parked on the curb waiting for him. Then Mr. Rice was seen on the video running on Ivan Allen Blvd. side of the building, and he threw a black revolver on a stairwell that was adjacent to the sidewalk. [...]
“A series of drops of bloods lead to the loaded revolver that was found on Ivan Allen Blvd side. The serial number of the weapon is: H37601 Smith and Wesson 32 Cal. Long. I ran the weapon and it is possibly stolen out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. It takes them 24 hours to confirm if the weapon was actually stolen, and an investigator will follow up with Chattanooga. ID unit 7346 arrived on scene and took pictures on the scene, he took blood samples of the sidewalk, and took the shell case, and the revolver and they were placed in Police property as evidence. I drove to the next crime scene on 68 Linden Ave where the vehicle is located, which was secured by Officer Bien-aime. ID arrived on scene and took pictures of the vehicle.
“I noticed a black book bag that was abandoned on the parking lot next to the Porsche. I opened the bag and found 240.4 Grams of marijuana and a US Passport that belongs to Mr. Rice. ID took pictures of the bag and its contents, and the bag was handed over to Investigator Fowler along with $5,953 in cash that was in Mr. Rice’s possession when he was shot and they were left inside the vehicle to be taken to property as evidence. Mr. Rice was charged with reckless conduct and possession of marijuana (240.4 Grams).”
Rice entered the D-League after being dismissed from the Georgia Tech basketball team in March 2012 following a bizarre incident outside an Atlanta nightclub. Rice was only charged with permitting unlawful operation of a vehicle, but a student manager in the same car was charged with driving under the influence and another passenger was charged with discharging a firearm under the influence (apparently by accident). Rice had had several disciplinary issues prior to his dismissal and spoke of that incident as a wakeup call.
We will update this story as more details become available.

Well, intoxicated people can be alert yet show signs of inattentiveness. It depends on the drug and its effects. Addiction mimics about 200 other problems or conditions so it can be difficult to tell if someone is high unless you are trained in substance abuse. This is one of the ways in which it stays hidden in schools, business and politics. Even when it is obvious that someone is high on TV or in public, it is often dismissed by the talk show host and others as cute or random.
However, usually fatigued people go to sleep. If they do talk, it is to avoid direct answers to questions or blame others or justify their condition.
All in all, fatigued people do not repeat their episodes.
When Charlie Sheen was hypomanic after serious drug episodes, we glamorized and the media sensationalized his downfall, focusing on the self-centered and childish manner in which he spoke and acted. The lessons passed us by. I did a You Tube video on his drug abuse spectacle, stating that I thought he could educated the world on addiction if he chose. He chose not to, similar to many celebrities who also make this choice. I don't understand why those who have a microphone don't use it to give accurate information about addiction. If IN recovery, they are the experts.
We need to look as Lamar Odom's path as typical of anyone who has this problem. The problem progresses until loss of control is obvious, use continues and, if no one sets boundaries, detaches or ends the relationship with a qualified message that, "when the abuse stops, we can be together again," the abuse progresses further and the problem gets worse until death or institutionalization. Consequences must be felt by the abuser, not shielded from awareness and thus rationalized by the abuser and his enablers.
I watched Anna Nicole Smith on Howard Stern's show when she was very intoxicated and the addiction was ignored. Elvis was given drugs by those who were entrusted to care for him. Numerous overdoses are covered up by caretakers who live off the celebrity. The stories go on and on...
If the media would focus on the educating the public about addiction and forget the money, we can learn a great deal about the real truth of addiction, how it treacherously enters the lives of our loved ones and how no one knows what to do or stay until they get outraged and explode or just leave. We must begin to "Just Say Something" while we can still be caring and logical and help those who are under the spell of addiction. They are on their way to a torturous death.

Lamar Odom's recovery from a drug overdose and almost three-day coma has been described as "miraculous," but he is not out of the woods yet, E! News has learned exclusively.
As of Friday evening, the 35-year-old former NBA star remains on dialysis due to kidney failure. Also, while he appears to be "neurologically intact," doctors won't know the extent of the possible brain damage he had suffered until he is fully awake.
On Friday morning, he woke up and spoke for the first time since he was hospitalized on Tuesday following a drug overdose at a brothel in Nevada, telling Khloé Kardashian, "Hey baby," and giving her the thumbs up. E! News has learned that Odom, who is very groggy while coming off sedation, was also able to say "good morning." He is following and comprehending commands and giving the thumbs up and thumbs down when answering, which are good signs.
A hospital source had told E! News this week Odom appeared to have suffered an "ischemic stroke," which is caused by a blood clot preventing blood flow to the brain and is often associated with an overdose of cocaine and other drugs. The source had said at the time "virtually every drug imaginable" was found in Odom's system.
E! News has also learned Odom is "100 percent breathing on his own." He is wearing a non rebreather mask that is pumping oxygen. He had previously been hooked up to a ventilator. Many were in shock when they heard the news he no longer needed it. The next step is to wean him off the oxygen. However, if his body weakens, he may have to be placed back on the ventilator.
Odom also recently had a normal EKG test, which showed his heart is functioning normally. His heart rate and blood pressure are good.
A near death experience can break denial if the consequences are felt. There is a evidence such as loss of control, prior history of problems connected with substances(some illicit) such as physical, legal, job, emotional and mental consequences. In addition, he has a prior DUI and two reported NBA violations for positive drug tests (See below). These are not just coincidental. What else do loved ones need to see to help him so that he doesn't go the way of Whitney Houston, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Winehouse...?
Let's see if his enablers support his problem or hold him accountable by setting boundaries and not shielding him from the consequences. This happens when loved ones make excuses and/or blame the system or anyone for the problem.
We get clean and sober when we feel the pain and loss needed to motivate us to surrender to help. I highly recommend all involved seek accurate information from trained addiction counselors who are clean and sober themselves and learn how to help effectively. Interventions are an art Above all, avoid the clutches of big business treatment who are motivated by greed and power.

Basketball star and Kardashian spouse Lamar Odom settled his drunken driving charge with a no contest plea Monday.
Odom, 33, must serve 36 months' probation, attend three months of alcohol counseling and pay a total of $1,814 in fines and fees for the DUI charge, according to Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Rob Wilcox.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles will hold a hearing later to decide how long Odom's driver's license will be suspended. It was automatically suspended when he was arrested.
Odom, who is married to reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, changed his not guilty plea, entered before a Los Angeles County judge two months ago to a no contest plea, Wilcox said.
He was arrested on a driving under the influence charge in the early morning hours of August 30 by a California Highway Patrol officer who reported seeing Odom, 34, driving his white Mercedes SUV in a "serpentine manner at 50 mph."
Odom "showed objective signs of intoxication and he was unable to perform his field sobriety tests," a CHP news release said.
In 2001, Odom admitted to having violated NBA drug policies twice.
"I've made a couple (of mistakes) and I may make a couple again, but hopefully they won't be as big as this one," Odom told reporters then.
Odom is a free agent who has played in the NBA for 14 years, including for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Dallas Mavericks and, most recently, the Los Angeles Clippers.
Addiction is highly treatable. We usually 'break denial' and become motivated to seek help for alcohol and drug problems when there is a crisis. This is in part because we cannot see the problem the same as we can see other addictions such as people smoking cigarettes. The symptoms are not visible. However, this is not only because the problem is invisible. The problem is predominantly kept secret by power driven, greedy so-called specialists who hustle people into treatment centers, promise success and give ineffective treatment when the client and the family is terrified of death or incarceration, thus shielding them from the consequences needed to get sober and clean. They take the money from desperate victims only to discharge them when this money runs out. Most clients drink and/or use drugs immediately after they leave the treatment center anyway.
This is why the problem proliferates and perpetuates. There is too much profit stemming from ineffective treatment. Lack of integrity and character prohibit effective treatment. Let's take the hustle out of treatment.
Get better Lamar. Then get effective treatment from your free twelve-step program. It's the only way to get sober and clean - this is based on my 50 years of treating addicts and alcoholics and watching the successes and failures.
Thanks for your support. God knows we need your efforts.
Continued use of substances is a sign of loss of control and not recovery. The idea that an addict can be treated with substances or be prescribed continued use of a substance under the guise of treatment undermines the concept of effective and 'best fit recovery' and is thoughtless even when rationalized. Addicts love the idea because they can continue to get high.
MLB GM Brian Cashman declared that CC Sabathia had a 'life issue' and said that this is bigger than the game (ESPN, 10-04-15). It's encouraging to hear a sports leader valuing recovery. Maybe there is hope.
Great message!!! Sabathia and GM emphasize the grave nature of addiction and the harm done to self and family. Great message!!!
It's about time that sports supported recovery. Sabathia took a stand for his recovery - He prioritized recovery over the world series. That's what recovering people need to do in order to get and stay sober and clean. We need to place recovery first, over ALL else!. Period.

An example is when I was in graduate school taking counseling classes and was told that we have to take charge of our life. Then in recovery I was instructed to give up control of my life as I had no control.
The paradox unwinds when I use a Higher Power (HP) to give me control and then I can act from an illusion of control.
I have power through a Higher Power. I did not birth myself and I have little control over death. In between, I have free will. When I give this to an HP, I have control and live without much fear or negativity. I like this choice. Nothing else makes sense.
Thx for your support. I can do little without you.

Backup quarterback and very talented player with an incredible opportunity for success, Gator Treon Harris, was suspended for testing positive for marijuana according to ESPN report
(Brett McMurphy, 09-23-2015). He cannot play this Saturday against Tennessee. Do you think that a social Cannabis user would jeopardize his career to smoke pot when he knew he could be tested?
If you are a social pot smoker, you answered no. If you are an abuser or addict, you answered sure.

You attract that which you desire and think about. Trust this process. Everyone from Aristotle to Emerson to Peele to Dyer have emphasized positive thinking and the concept of manifesting your destiny via proper use of thoughts. We can do this when we keep the intellect over the emotions (Fr. Joe Martin, 1986).

Recovery is characterized by abstinence from all mood-altering chemicals. If one is truly addicted, i.e., has the genetic proclivity for addiction to drugs and alcohol, drugs can and have triggered cravings, physiological and psychological, that has lead to relapses. Cannabis is no exception. For the addict, any drug can trigger a relapse into hell.
